RIB SOCKS IN HADAL LIBRARY COTTON

$38.00
  • Details

Tender’s rib cotton socks are knitted and hand linked in England from raw unbleached cotton, with nylon for durability, then dyed with natural dyes, or left in their ‘unborn’ natural state, in which case they will shrink to fit with the first wash. Tender’s socks are made with a loop-back, or terry, double knit sole. This makes them especially comfortable, and appropriate to wear with lighter shoes or even heavy boots.

Traditional hosiery (like these socks) is knitted as a long continuous tube of many socks, which are then cut apart into individual socks. These are then linked, which means that the open sock has the two sides knitted together, leaving a flat, seamless, join at the toe. Linking requires the operator to loop every corresponding stitch of the top and bottom of the sock, by hand, onto a knitting machine.

Hadal dyes are the deepest colors achievable through reactive dyeing, darker than the natural and traditional dyes. As with natural dyeing, though, the whole garment is dyed after sewing, showing subtle variations in tone and depth between different fabrics and constructions. Following the development of other hadal colors in previous sea- sons, this production introduces hadal library. Named for the traditional leather binding color of library books, hadal library is a deep maroon red-brown.

Tender’s designer William Kroll puts a lot of care into their research, design, manufacture, and wear. Just as a gardener tends to a vegetable patch, or a shepherd is the tender to a flock of sheep, Tender has the hope that it's customers will live with their products, wearing them hard, but respecting their provenance and the stories they have to tell. The British-made clothes and accessories are manufactured in small factories, ateliers, and homes around the country, exploring new approaches to traditional weaving, making, tanning, and dyeing.
