WEBBING FLY SHIRT IN WATTLE DYED DENIM

The three body panels for the Webbing Fly Shirt are assembled with the sleeves and then bias bound all around in one pass, starting and ending underneath the collar, which is added at the end. Instead of a standard button placket, a wide strip of cotton herringbone webbing is sewn to the outside of the right front, and the inside of the left, with buttonholes sewn in place. These are also caught into the edge binding, forming a concealed button fly. Because bias binding can not be used to edge sharp corners, the front opening and sides are cut in smooth curves.

The 10 oz Cross Weave Denim fabric is dyed with saddened wattle dye. Wattle comes from Acacia wood, also known as wattle, mimosa, or cutchwood, is a thorny tree native to Australia, India, and China, and has been used for thousands of years to tan leather and dye fabrics. When British settlers arrived in Australia in the mid 19th Century they built shelters using the ancient ‘wattle and daub’ method of weaving together twigs and plastering them with mud. Because acacia was plentiful and its thin twigs were flexible, the trees were named ‘wattle’ trees. Saddening is a traditional method of darkening natural dyes with iron. By using a different mixture of mordanting salts saddened wattle garments come out darker and cooler in tone than the warmer tan of previous productions.

Tender’s designer William Kroll puts a lot of care into their research, design, manufacture, and wear. Just as a gardener tends to a vegetable patch, or a shepherd is the tender to a flock of sheep, Tender has the hope that it's customers will live with their products, wearing them hard, but respecting their provenance and the stories they have to tell. The British-made clothes and accessories are manufactured in small factories, ateliers, and homes around the country, exploring new approaches to traditional weaving, making, tanning, and dyeing.
